URGENT: FOSTER CARE OR RENTAL NEEDED: Three dogs face death

Three healthy little dogs will be lethally injected - unless immediate foster care or animal-friendly accommodation is found.spats2

Their distraught caregiver, Carol, has desperately tried to find rental accommodation, but none is available for her with Harry (8), Buster (8) and Spats (10). She cannot afford kennelling fees.

Harry is a Miniature Schnauzer, Buster is a smooth-coated Jack Russell and Spats is a wire-coated Jack Russell. All are friendly neutered males.

They will chase cats and have never met any children. They sleep on Carol's bed each night and seldom leave her fenced property.

Emergency foster care or suitable rental accommodation is needed. Ideally the dogs would all stay together, but in this dire situation, they may have to be fostered separately.

They are currently living on the North Shore of Auckland.

Please let me know ASAP if you (or someone you know) is able to foster all/any of these little boys. Or if you know of an animal-friendly landlord for this pensioner and her companions.

I will be seeking permanent homes for these dogs if we are unable to secure suitable accommodation for this tight-knit family in the near future...

Thank you.

UPDATE

Carol was intensely relieved when I asked her to cancel Buster, Spats and Harry's appointments for lethal injections. She has moved in as our only human shelter guest and, like her non-human counterparts, is recovering from weeks of distress, lack of sleep and inability to eat. We have placed her beloved dogs in the care of a nearby boarding facility so she is able to visit them and take them off the premises at will.

Having spent exhausting hours speaking with real estate agents and landlords, I am ecstatic that animal-loving couple, Linda and Shane, have come forward to offer Carol and her fur-family an ideal rental situation - which will be available to them some time in the future.

On her move-out deadline date, in an act of faith and desperation, Carol instructed the removal company to take her houselot to this rental address which she had never viewed. Her future landlords have her best interests at heart and, noting her disability, are immediately installing a remote-opening garage door for her and an outdoor stair handrail.

My deep gratitude to all who distributed my plea and put it on their own websites and social media pages. Thanks also to Pets on the Net for giving it priority status. The dozens of genuine offers of foster and permanent care for these little dogs has been emotional and overwhelming. Please forgive me if I have been unable to respond to each of you in person.

Huge appreciation to Heather and Susan who have sponsored the cost of  vet checks, micro-chip registration, double vaccinations, flea and worm treatments. If anyone can help with the dentistry each of these little boys need, I would love to hear from you.

Professional groomer Linde Walker graciously stepped forward to give Harry an urgent groom and each of the dogs a much-needed nail clip. Thanks to her expertise and generosity, they can now run and play in comfort.

We also look forward to accepting Sonia’s kind offer of a complimentary groom for each of these dogs following their kennelling period. Please continue to check our website for further updates and future photographs.

Heartfelt thanks to Victoria and Sonia and to Shawn from The Animal Sanctuary for helping with the discounted kennelling fees of $30 per day. If anyone else is able to contribute to the costs of this rescue, please click here.

$1,000 URGENTLY NEEDED FOR YEPPE’S LIFE-SAVING SURGERY

yeppe 20face

UPDATE 28/2/13: Today I was able to pay the vet clinic $2,000 towards our outstanding bills. Due to two large donations and dozens of others, Yeppe's bill was paid in full, the costs were met to professionally secure the gate on his property and enough was left over to chip away at our bill. It's a relief to have our account at less than $1,000 for the first time in years! My deep gratitude to everyone who has been part of Yeppe's rescue team - and therefore, part of our rescue team too.

yeppe--hana-oak2

Little Yeppe has made a full recovery and I am enjoying walking with him in local parks to ensure he doesn't lose confidence with other dogs following the attack he suffered. His stitches and Elizabethan collar have been removed, all medications have stopped, he has had his last post-op vet check and he has been given clearance to resume life as normal. It's been a pleasure to help this dear little dog and his family.

Yeppe is pictured with his loving young mistress during one of our walks together.

Thank you so much to our supporters and the media for allowing us to act from the heart in situations such as Yeppe's - that call for immediate life-saving action.

ORIGINAL PLEA: $1,000 URGENTLY NEEDED FOR YEPPE’S LIFE-SAVING SURGERY

When my husband and I rushed Brie to the after-hours emergency vet clinic, we had no idea that another helpless canine would capture our hearts…

yeppe-pre-surgery

It transpired that Brie was suffering with geriatric vestibular syndrome which affects balance, and that she would likely make a full recovery within two weeks. Once she was more stable, we noticed a deeply sedated Miniature Pinscher shivering on the operating table with gaping chest and shoulder wounds and an internally haemorrhaging eye.

While taken out for an evening walk this little rescue dog named Yeppe had been severely mauled by a large dog a few streets from his family home. Although the attacking dog was on a leash, Yeppe could not be freed from its mouth. With valiant attempts by his guardians (Mina and her 11-year-old daughter Hana) and the help of a local resident, the screaming 8-year-old dog was finally released. The man with the attacking dog ran off into the night.

We could hear distressed and constant sobbing in the reception area and asked the vet if the dog was dying. Mina was absolutely distraught while her little girl, feeling overwhelmed, had run back to the car where she was wailing for the pending loss of her loved pet. Tragically, the cost of the necessary surgery to treat and close Yeppe’s wounds was beyond their means - so euthanasia was being discussed.

With Animal Re-homing’s own outstanding vet bills at just over $3,000, we watched helplessly as a heart-breaking decision was made. Paul and I acutely felt their grief and desperately brainstormed for a solution.

Suddenly unable to ignore the situation any longer, we offered to take responsibility for Yeppe’s vet care, trusting that our supporters would come to the rescue. The vet was extremely relieved that this friendly little dog would be saved and his blood-spattered family cried all over again at the news of his last minute reprieve. (Hana is pictured with Yeppe in the back of my car before I took him for his surgery).

Back home, I slept on the floor beside Brie while Yeppe remained at the clinic and was monitored throughout the night. I collected him early the next morning and took him to Forrest Hill Vet Clinic. Fortunately he was the only emergency patient at the time, so Dr Kevin O’Meara began surgery immediately.yeppe-pre-surgery1

X-rays revealed that there were no obviously broken bones, and by mid-afternoon this dear little dog, whose name means ‘handsome’ in Korean, was awake and eating his first post-operative meal.

Yeppe’s injuries are extremely painful so he stayed overnight at the hospital and will be closely monitored throughout his recovery.

Kind-hearted Dr O’Meara almost halved Yeppe’s vet bill, trimming it down to $1,000 plus follow-up costs. This is not the first time veterinarians have generously discounted expenses for the animals we rescue. It’s a beautiful experience when people rally together to bring about happy outcomes for animals and their guardians. These essential gestures keep me going in this endless work and I implore our supporters to once again come forward to help me with this animal emergency. (Dr O'Meara and I are pictured with Yeppe following his surgery).

Yesterday I took Yeppe back to Mina and Hana and provided a crate to contain his blood drops and to keep him still during his rehabilitation period. He is eating from our hands and spending a lot of time sleeping. Because he pulled at the drains in his wounds, he is currently wearing an Elizabethan head collar. Tomorrow I will return him to the vet where his wounds will be checked and the drains removed.

The vet clinic and I will remain intimately involved in Yeppe’s recovery. It’s possible he may need a new home or long term foster care - if Mina is able to go to Korea to visit her mum in Korea who is, sadly, suffering with cancer.

Donations for Yeppe’s bill can be posted to Linda Nunn, Animal Re-homing, PO BOX 35-298, Browns Bay, Auckland 0753. Counter and online donations can be made to ASB Account Number 12 3059 0650626 00. Credit card payments may be made to our FundraiseOnline account. Please click here.

I look forward to your generous contributions with heartfelt appreciation. Please visit this news page for updates on Yeppe’s progress.

Note: If anyone knows the identity of the man whose dog attacked Yeppe at about 9.30pm in Killybeggs Road, Pinehill, Auckland on the evening of 28th January, please contact us. He is described as a tallish, slender Korean, over 50 years old with a long face and short, thinning black hair. He was clean-shaven and wearing a white, round-necked, short-sleeved T-shirt and wasn’t wearing glasses on the night. The dog with him was medium-to-large with a very short tan coat, pointed ears and a black snout. Thank you.

THE LOVE OF LILY BRINGS AID TO OTHER ANIMALS...

lily-victoria-sWhen her beloved Tibetan Spaniel, Lily, passed to the next world, Victoria wanted to do something special to honour her friend.

She contacted us and The Animal Sanctuary and offered to auction her four expensive handbags on Trade Me. Each organisation would receive half of the proceeds.

It was very exciting to have Victoria on the other end of the phone as we watched the auction in progress. I couldn’t believe it when the bids went into the hundreds of dollars. After twenty nail-biting minutes on the phone, the auction finally closed.

Victoria is pictured gifting me a much-needed cheque for almost $1,300. This has enabled us to pay off our debt with Masterpet, to release a pound dog and take her to a canine skin specialist and to put the remainder towards our huge vet bills. In addition, this lovely lady has offered to volunteer a full day of her time to Animal Re-homing once a month.

We are very grateful to SAFE for putting Victoria in contact with us and to Victoria for offering us this fundraising initiative. It was lovely that the NZ Herald ran a story which gave extra visibility to the pending auction and that Trade Me waived their usual success fee.

Little Lily must be so proud!

PACK RAT STEW & OTHER TALES by NZ author Don Batley

pack-rat-stew-front-cover The 32 pages of quirky, rhyming animal stories in this A4 sized paperback book will appeal to all age groups, including young-at-heart adults.

The beautiful coloured illustrations of Chris Schipper will delight even the youngest of children.

Pack Rat Stew will be a wonderful gift for the kids in your life or for libraries, schools and kindergartens. Please spread the word.

This special book was written and donated by Kiwi author Don Batley (pictured). He dedicated it to his much-loved friend Bandit the cat. Don has been actively supporting our work with animals in strife since early 2006 when he adopted five piglets from us who are happily living out their natural lifespans on his property. Thank you Don – we appreciate you so much!

Don is unlikely to produce a re-run of his book, so this is your last chance to get copies. Pack Rat Stew is available at this price only while our stock lasts. They will make great Christmas stocking fillers. Please order today!

author-don-batley.jpg We are hoping our supporters will buy the books in groups of 5 or more to quickly raise the urgently needed funds and to save us postage & packaging costs. However, we welcome orders for smaller numbers too.

NOTE: Special thanks to Karen Wheeler at S.G. Digital Ltd in Auckland for donating enough Animal Re-homing business cards for inclusion with each book.

JILL & BEN – THE FLOWERPOT FRIENDS by NZ artist George Doel

jill--ben-garden-people These eye-catching, 900mm tall, wooden garden people are original hand-crafted pieces. They weigh about 13.5kg each and are made from H4 ground retention tanalised timber. The joints are glued, screwed and/or galvanised nailed. The terracotta pots are replaceable and Jill & Ben’s birthdates are under their hats. Their heads will turn in any direction and they can easily be moved about by lifting them under their armpits.

Although they are built to last and can be left outdoors all year round, George recommends putting them in a sheltered spot during the winter to extend their lifespan.

Jill likes people and constantly waves to garden visitors while her colourful, ribboned plaits blow in the breeze. With her golden eyes, matching nose and fashionable scarf, she will add colour and interest to any garden.

Ben is a bit of a rebel with his flowing hair, droopy moustache and a ‘mum’ tattoo on his arm. With his John Denver specs, green eyes & nose and a scarf to match Jill’s, he cannot help but attract the interest of passers-by. Being an old soldier, Ben wears a note reminding people that “Old soldiers never die. They just go to heaven and re-group”.

aartist-george-doel Jill and Ben were created and donated by Glenfield artist George Doel - specifically as a fundraising initiative for Animal Re-homing. This is not the first time we have benefited from his generosity and talent. Earlier this year George (pictured) gifted us beautiful dog sculptures to help raise funds. We are very grateful for his on-going support.

In the spirit of fundraising we are hoping that Jill & Ben will sell for an outrageous price.

To see more pictures of Jill & Ben exploring the neighbourhood, please click here.

NOTE: Special thanks to Ross Healy at Timber World in Albany for providing the necessary wood to create these cute garden folk at a very good price.

Thank you so much to each of you for participating in our 2012 fundraising campaign. Your help is life-saving and enables us to continue our work.
