FOUR WHITE FANTAIL PIGEONS SEEK SHELTER

whitefantailpigeonsSomeone in Orewa, Auckland area obviously dismantled their dovecote or their aviary leaving about 15 beautiful white fantail pigeons homeless.

Most of them have been killed by traffic on the main highway, but four have been rescued. If you have a large aviary or chicken coop-like construction offering perches and shelter for 2-3 months, please apply for their adoption. They will initially be wing-clipped so that they don’t return to Orewa.

octaviaherchicksOCTAVIA & HER EIGHT CHICKS NEED A SAFE HAVEN

When hens and roosters are dumped in public places, they encounter all manner of suffering. This beautiful family was very lucky to set up home where caring retirement village residents contacted me for help. Please keep in mind that Octavia is likely to have equal numbers of hens and cockerels in her clutch. You will therefore need to have a plan in place to stop further breeding and to ensure that all nine chickens live out the length of their natural lifespan.

COCKATIEL & TWO CANARY FRIENDS

cockatielcanariesSadly, when the children lost interest in them and the caregiver decided to renovate, this little trio became superfluous.

Their ages and gender are unknown and they have not been handled as pets.

They are used to a large walk-in aviary and must be adopted into a similarly spacious environment.

UPDATE ON VICTOR’S HEALTH STATUS & HIS FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

It is with a humble heart that I thank loyal Animal Re-homing supporters, other rescue agencies, businesses, North Shore Times, Central Leader and their readers, and complete strangers for contributing to the costs of Victor's medical needs. All of his current veterinary fees have been covered. Many thanks also to Forrest Hill Vet Clinic and Auckland Animal Eye Centre for offering discounts for Victor.

I have good news and sad news to share.

victors stitches removed kevinThe good news is that Victor’s blood results were excellent so we were confident he would be strong enough to go ahead with his many treatments under general anaesthesia. In addition to a thorough vet check, urinalysis, in-house and lab blood tests; Victor had X-rays taken, was neutered, and had three lumps removed along with five rotten teeth. His remaining teeth were de-scaled and polished, he has completed a course of four Pentasan injections to help with his arthritis and is on a special food to assist with this condition. He had his nails clipped, his anal glands emptied and is now fully vaccinated. In addition, he has been treated twice for fleas, ear-mites and worms, is now registered and micro-chipped and has been provided with a lovely collar and lead. Now that he has no toothache, the dear old fellow loves his food and we have to be careful he doesn’t become overweight. That’s the good news! The photo opposite is of him recently having all his stitches removed by veterinarian Kevin O'Meara.

victor peter eye examThe sad news is that we took Victor to the eye specialist yesterday (see photo opposite). Unfortunately he is clinically blind. He has no vision whatever in his left eye, due to an unknown historical injury. In very bright environments, the remaining eye may have minimal sight of shadows moving. We were all hoping that the small cataract could be removed and his vision restored. Unfortunately the retina is so degenerated, that removing the cataract would make no difference to his vision. We were so hoping that he could go into his retirement with some sight, but it’s not to be… On the bright side, I don’t have to fundraise for eye surgery now.

All that remains is for a devoted home to be offered for this wonderful old gentleman with the wagging tail - where he will be cherished and allowed to live out the rest of his natural life-span in comfort, warmth and with plenty of human company. Please click here for more photographs of Victor and to read his profile. Thank you.

victors raffle prizes volunteers sell raffle

Very special thanks to Sheryl Gore of Petxcite who singlehandedly petitioned vet clinics and pet stores until she had three beautiful prizes to enable a quick local raffle for Victor’s vet costs. Within a week, just over $1,000 was raised. First prize - a basket full of cat goodies - went to Jeremy Anderson of Murrays Bay, second prize - a bed full of dog goodies - to Ingrid Shaw of Torbay and third prize - a cat or small dog bed - to Bernadette Sisson of Browns Bay. Thank you also to North Shore Policing Centre for drawing the raffle.

Much appreciation to all the donors, selling venues and ticket purchasers and particular thanks to:

I never fail to be overwhelmed at the goodness of humanity when approached for help with an animal in strife. Please keep an eye on the HAPPY ENDINGS pages of our website to see where and when Victor finds his retirement home.

MY HUGE APPRECIATION TO YOU ALL.

NEWSFLASH

Dear Friends,

So many wonderful, homeless animals have been placed with ideal caregivers since our last newsflash. Please visit the HAPPY ENDINGS pages of our website to see who is now living in a loving home. Meanwhile many others are still waiting for help and caring guardians…

URGENT: VICTOR NEEDS OUR HELP FOR SURGERY

Victor requires a home, but he needs surgery before he can be adopted.

He is a very sweet, half-blind Greyhound X who licked my face and put his paw into my hand on the first day we met. Due to his own health problems and circumstances, “Vicco’s” devoted guardian can no longer care for him or contribute to the vet procedures this elderly gentleman needs.victor_headshot

His veterinary fee alone will amount to $1,700.00. Along with the usual neutering, micro-chipping, nail-clipping, blood tests, X-rays, urinalysis, etc, he needs dental extractions and lumps removed.

And there is a chance that vision can be restored to Victor’s remaining eye – at a specialist cost of $2,750.00. That would be fantastic, but could this amount possibly be donated for him?

To read all about this gorgeous senior citizen and to help raise the funds that will prepare him for a new retirement home, please click here We did it for Jake in April and I’m hopeful that, between us all, we can do it for Victor this month. Thank you in grateful anticipation!

MADORI IS A LOVELY PRIMA DONNA

Madori came into our care when her desperate rescuer found himself homeless and had

madori1to live in his car. For six months we waited while he searched for lodgings for them both. Although he now has somewhere to live, sadly, it is not suitable for Madori.

This healthy three-year-old girl is a delight – playful, cheeky, mischievous, and flirtatious. She has the most endearing quality of purring against our chests and wrapping her paws around our necks whenever we sit down. She takes this position as though it is her absolute right – and who could resist such loving attention and such a deliriously happy, closed-eyed face?

Madori likes to be Queen of her castle, so she needs to be the only, very spoiled, very indulged and very loved fur-child. Don’t expect her to share with dogs, cats or any other non-human animal.

To apply for her adoption or for more information and photos of beautiful Miss Madori, please click here.

URGENT: TRINITY NEEDS A GREAT HOME BY THIS FRIDAY 16th SEPTEMBER

Eighteen months ago, 3-year-old Trinity was rescued by a kind young woman named

trinity2Anna, who has recently moved back into the family home – where dogs are not wanted. Also Anna now has a busy lifestyle and has plans to travel which do not include this loving, active and playful girl.

Trinity loves to interact with people and dogs, but is a cat-chaser, so she cannot cohabitate in a home with feline flatmates. She must be allowed to spend time both indoors and out and sleep in the house with her human pack at night.

If you have good leadership skills and will formally commit to taking this energetic Lab X Staffy to basic group obedience classes, please click here and scroll down for more photos and information.

THREE SUPER PUPPIES READY FOR ADOPTION

Peanut is the only boy pictured here between his cute sisters - Princess who is mostly tan and Pickles who is predominantly black.pickels_princess_peanut

As soon as they have recovered from their recent de-sexing surgeries they will be available to applicants who will offer them homes as indoor pets with lots of outdoor walks and stimulation. Successful applicants will be very fortunate to adopt any one of these friendly puppies.

Loved and cared for from the day of their birth five months ago, these Lab X pups are all very affectionate, energetic, playful and have a love of walks – especially on the beach.

Attendance at a series of beginners group obedience classes is a condition of their adoption. For further information and many more photographs, please click here

BONNIE & CLYDE SEEK SAFE LODGINGS

Illegally dumped in a public park, Bonnie and Clyde saw one of their buddies killed by a dog and the other squashed on the busy road.

bonnie_clyde

We quickly rescued this attractive pair and would like them to stay together because it’s clear that they are bonded friends. If you have a plan to stop them hatching out unexpected chicks each season and if you can keep them safe from hawks, dogs and poachers, please let me know. You would need to be zoned rural and have neighbours who wouldn’t mind hearing Clyde sing his joy to the world. For more photos and information please click here

I also have solitary roosters in need of somewhere to live. Do you have space on your property for one or 20 homeless roosters to sleep in your trees at night and be provided with food and water each day? It will need to be a hen-free zone.

GEESE MUST LEAVE PUBLIC PARK

Again we have been approached by council staff who, thankfully, opt for re-homing rather than slaughtering geese when the numbers become too big for them to manage.

We have found wonderful guardians for more than 350 geese over the years and we need life-long homes for up to 12 more of them now. My husband is pictured with one of 16 geese we helped rescue from Kell Park on Auckland’s North Shore when they began crossing the busy main road. Fortunately no geese and no humans were involved in a traffic tragedy before we were asked for help.

Do you have a suitable body of water for them to enjoy and plenty of grass for them to eat? If so, please apply. Thank you

THANK YOU TO LENA AT PET ANGELS

It is thanks to Lena’s patient skill and kindness that this newsflash is possible and that the Animal Re-homing website is kept up to date. Pet Angels offers excellent care for your pets when you can’t be there to tend to their walking, feeding or long-term needs. Please visit www.petangels.co.nz to feel confident that your pets will be well catered for during your absences…

DONATION MADE AT THE NATIONAL ANIMAL RIGHTS CONFERENCE

As promised, at the National Animal Rights Conference $1,000 of Animal Re-homing's raffle proceeds was presented to our chosen recipient whose buildings and resources were lost in the Christchurch earthquakes. Yolanda Soryl from the Christchurch Vegetarian Centre is pictured accepting the cheque from me.

The three day, Auckland-based conference was a resounding success thanks to the huge organisational efforts of SAFE (Save Animals From Exploitation).
