Hannah and Kyan contact us from Milford School

It was very special to receive a request from Hannah and Kyan who attend Milford School in Auckland. Discussions about Anzac Day heroes led the class to think about modern day counterparts. Their letter read, “We are learning about interviewing heroes and we have decided that we would like to interview you. As you save lots of animals we really appreciate it as we love animals and care for them.”

Animal Re-homing volunteer Laurie, and Bumble (the one-legged hen) accompanied me. Hannah and Kyan were confident in their role as interviewers and asked 12 questions. The answer that surprised the class most was to the question “What’s your favourite animal that you have saved?” I told them I loved saving any animal but especially the ones that some people choose to eat. I said I was a vegan and thought animals like cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and fish are just as beautiful as other pets but not many people rescue them.

The teacher kindly allowed Bumble to come out of her travel cage to show off her balancing skills following her recent leg amputation and I was pleased to be gifted with a beautiful drawing of Bumble by one of the classmates. Later I received a newsletter with an article about all the ‘heroes’ the children had interviewed.

Thank you so much Kyan and Hannah for choosing Animal Re-homing as your modern day hero organisation. We feel very honoured…

Say NO to spending public money on a cruel sport

The Christchurch City Council is planning to spend nearly half a million dollars of ratepayer money on relocating the greyhound racing club. This abusive industry exploits innocent dogs for human entertainment and profit. Why should the public pay for it to move?

Please sign and share The Greyhound Protection League of New Zealand’s petition to stop public money being spent on animal cruelty in the gambling industry.

Knopa finally found her home after five years with us

A malnourished miniature cat turned up on a woman’s doorstep and managed to cry for help with her new-born kitten in her mouth. The kind lady took them in, named the cat Knopa and found a loving home for her baby. After five years as one of our shelter residents we had almost given up on tiny Knopa being adopted. Although she was very affectionate with us, due to her shyness she was often overlooked.

When Carol came to choose a cat it was love at first sight when she spotted Knopa. Six months later and with a newly acquired kitten for company, Knopa is finally coming out of her shell and enjoying Carol’s affectionate touch. The video clip shows Knopa and the kitten venturing outdoors for the first time. We are all ecstatic that Knopa is settling in and that love is being reciprocated. Thank you Carol for your patience and wonderful care of the girl we came to adore while she was living with us. Another happy ending!

Seventeen-year-old Brownie

Seventeen-year-old Brownie was taken to a vet clinic for a lethal injection because her family was moving house and didn’t think it was fair to uproot her. She was such a head-bunting snuggle-bunny that the kind vet asked if they would sign Brownie over to the clinic’s care. They agreed, so he ran blood tests which showed nothing alarming. Brownie’s thyroid issue is managed by diet alone and she needs a dental – otherwise she is a surprisingly healthy and happy old girl.

We urgently need foster or permanent care for Brownie and we need $300 - $400 for her dental, extractions, fluids and micro-chipping. Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you can help in any way.

A Home for Grieving Nelly Please

Middle-aged Nelly lived happily with another cat until her elderly caregiver passed away. When he died she was grief-stricken. She moped about in his bedroom, began fighting with her feline friend and toileting inappropriately around the house. This beautiful dark Tortoiseshell was taken to the vet for a lethal injection… and we were contacted.

Nelly is great at using her litter tray and is tolerating the dog and many cats in our shelter. Restricted to two meals a day, this vocal puss has started to lose her excess weight and now enjoys playing with strings and other toys. Although she’s not keen to be picked up or placed on a lap, Nelly loves attention and affection. Her favourite pastime is cleaning herself in a sunny spot.

We think Nelly would prefer to be Queen of her Castle, so a cat-free home would be best for her. Please e-mail us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you would like to adopt this grieving girl.
