Womble & Hedgey are recovering well

If you see hedgehogs during the daytime, they need your help – so please keep them safely enclosed and contact Hedgehog Rescue New Zealand.

Womble and Hedgey were only a few days from death when we rescued them. They were suffering excruciating mange that left them skinny, bald, stinking, and caked in layers of their own dead skin. We took them to the shelter where they hungrily ate wet kitten food and drank plenty of water.

Fortunately one of our volunteers is experienced and patient in treating hedgehog mange, so we rushed these youngsters to Laurie. She donned gloves and generously poured warmed cooking oil over them to loosen the skin. (Some people use a soft paintbrush). She then began the gentle task of loosening and removing the dead skin. She told us that warmth is essential to their survival, so heat pads were set up in large, fully enclosed cat carriers and they were put to bed. In the early evening the procedure was repeated and plenty of wet and dry kitten food and water provided for the night.

The next day Womble and Hedgey went to the vet for the first of two parasite killing injections (Ivermectin) and an antibiotic eye cream to smear over the newly exposed damaged skin and around their eyes. The oiling and dead skin removal continued and tweezers were used to carefully remove the flaky skin inside their ears.

By day three only one oiling was needed and Laurie began administering a 3 day course of injectable antibiotics under Womble’s skin to treat an infection.

A second shot of Ivermectin was given a fortnight after the first and tiny prickles have now begun to emerge through their skin. When they have their full complement of spines, Womble and Hedgey will be looking for a safe place to live out their lives.

Huge thanks to Laurie for her dedicated nursing and her deep compassion for these sweet creatures. We are so lucky to have her on our Team!

Check out our video of Womble eating up a storm on the day we rescued him.

It's lovely to be appreciated!

It’s lovely to be appreciated.

Mother and daughter, Myra and Sophie, live in different neighbourhoods but they both became concerned when stray cats they were feeding began to breed. Suddenly there were a dozen beautiful felines – and none of them were de-sexed.

We acted quickly – providing traps, carry cages, food and recovery crates before seeking funds for the significant vet bills. Huge thanks to KittyCat Fixers and Community Cat Coalition - Auckland for kindly covering those costs. Myra and Sophie will continue caring for these cats and we will provide them with food when we can. Are you able to donate cat food to us please?

On the day our equipment was returned, Myra gifted us with a beautiful pot-plant…which, as you can see, our shelter animals also thoroughly enjoyed.

Safe home needed for the 'Little' chicken flock

HELP!

We thought we had an ideal home for the Little Flock when we rescued them from an urban neighbourhood. Little Rooster, Little Brown Hen and Little Black Hen were at certain risk of cat and dog attacks… and most of the humans were mistreating them. These tiny Bantams were being squirted with hoses, hit with stones and had a possum trap set for them when council contacted us for help. The lovely home that was offered for them had a huge enclosure - but it was impossible to put a canopy over it to protect them from hawks and other predators.

Not surprisingly these teeny adult birds are currently nervous of people. They are very agile and excellent flyers so they must have a fully enclosed living area. Eggs will need to be collected regularly to avoid more unwanted little roosters from being hatched.

Please contact us if you (or someone you know) would like to adopt this gorgeous trio into a safe environment. Thank you. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Sign and Share the Petition to Ban Rodeo

Please sign and share the petition to Ban Rodeo in New Zealand
https://www.change.org/p/the-new-zealand-house-of-represent…

Rodeo survives under the pretence that it’s entertainment. It’s outright animal abuse and decent human beings will have nothing to do with it. The video below was filmed in NZ just last summer.

There are over 40 of these barbaric “shows” scheduled this season, starting in only 11 days. Animal advocacy groups SPCA AUCKLANDFarmwatch and SAFE have combined forces to close them down. Animal Re-homing also fights to end this obnoxious industry… and so can you.

Timing is crucial, so please share, share, share!

URGENT: Special home needed for Bob by November

Due to financial hardship, Bob’s caregiver can no longer keep him. Greg adores this abandoned cat who came out of the bush and gradually worked his way into his heart and home about seven years ago.

In Greg’s words, “It is only through my present situation that I am looking to place Bob in a loving, safe environment. He is a special boy and hopefully will bring as much joy to you as he has to me…”

Bob is initially suspicious of strangers, so he will need someone who will patiently wait for him to trust them. Once trust is established, this handsome boy is very affectionate and playful. He rolls onto his back and enjoys gentle interaction on the floor or sitting alongside Greg on the couch. With his loud purr and companionable presence, Bob will make someone a special friend.

It would be ideal if he lived in a low-traffic area with bush nearby and someone at home most of the time. A child and dog-free home is sought where finances for vet care in his sunset years will be available.

We are looking for a quiet, loving home where Bob can have indoor and outdoor access through a cat door in a one or two person household. It would be lovely if Bob can again be the only cherished pet.

Bob’s age is unknown. He is in good health and is neutered, micro-chipped, wormed and flea treated. He must be adopted before November. He is currently living on the North Shore of Auckland.
