Bonnie & Clyde

It was such a pleasure to give Bonnie and Clyde into the permanent care of my dear friend Bunty. She was astounded that anyone could abandon such dear creatures to a fate of hunger, mauling by dogs and being hit by cars.

We released them into a large overgrown aviary with plenty of grass, tree stumps, roosting perches, dust for bathing and everything else a hen and rooster pair could wish for. Within moments Clyde puffed up his little chest, lifted his head and tested his crow on the other nine roosters and 15 or so hens free-ranging in the surrounding area. They were both pecking away at the foliage, chatting to one another and enjoying the sunshine when we walked away.

When the other resident animals have had a week or so to acquaint themselves with the newcomers through the mesh, the door will be opened to give Bonnie and Clyde full access to the stables, hay barn and other chicken-heaven delights. Lucky Bonnie & Clyde, lucky Bunty.

Many thanks to Ngairie for fostering Bonnie & Clyde until an ideal home presented itself.

ORIGINAL ADVERT: BONNIE & CLYDE SEEK A SAFE HAVEN

These medium breed chickens were illegally dumped in a public park. Sadly, one of their abandoned buddies was hit by a car and the other was killed by a dog.bonnie_clyde

We quickly rescued this attractive couple and temporarily have them in our holding pen until a sanctuary is found for them. They get along well and have been through a terrifying experience, so we would like them to be adopted together.

Applicants will need to explain the steps they will take to ensure Bonnie and Clyde will be safe from roaming dogs, hawks and poachers. They will also need a plan to stop surprise clutches of chicks hatching out each season.

Because 50% of chicks are unwanted males, it’s crucial that they are not born to be slaughtered or cruelly abandoned on a roadside or public park.bonnie_clyde3

Bonnie and Clyde are currently in Auckland, but safe havens will be considered in other parts of the North Island. If you believe you have an ideal situation to adopt these chickens, who are thought to be part Polish breed, I very much look forward to your application. Adoption criteria applies.

Thank you.

NOTE: If you witness anyone dumping chickens in public places, please note the time and date and write down their car number plate and description. If possible, also take a photograph of the offender(s) and forward all details to the Auckland SPCA so that a prosecution follows. Please inform others that abandoning an animal is cruel and is illegal under the Animal Welfare Act. Offenders can be fined up to $50,000.00, face a 12 month prison term…or both.
