Like other caring organisations, Animal Re-homing has rescued over 1,500 hens from 
battery farms. The photographs on these pages are of hens rescued in New Zealand just before their slaughter date.The pictures were taken during rehabilitation in their new or foster homes.
Before slaughter, these birds suffer lives of torment, crammed into cages for about 18 months - at which time they are killed because their egg production has declined.
When we collect these birds, we witness first-hand the misery, the stench, the brutal handling, the screaming, the death, the beak mutilation, the featherlessness, the twisted feet, the trampled cage mates, the open wounds, the broken wings, the lifeless eyes. Sitting in a rescue van with hundreds of these wretched creatures, I am always reduced to tears – tears of compassion yes, but also tears of frustration that the solution is so available to each of us.
Is eating free-range eggs the answer? Only if we close our eyes and ears to the reality of all systems, including free-range systems.
For every one of the billions of hens exploited for her egg laying ability, there was a brother. Whether hens are battery, barn or free-range farmed, millions of tiny male chicks are minced alive or gassed because they are superfluous to the egg industry. The humane answer is to stop eating eggs altogether. These reproductive excretions are not necessary for human health. Please boycott these cruel businesses. Withdraw your support of violence against innocent animals. That is all it will take for the suffering to end. We consumers have that power.
